Addictionscenter.com defines addiction as a “chronic dysfunction of the brain system that involves reward, motivation, and memory. It’s about the way your body craves a substance or behavior, especially if it causes a compulsive or obsessive pursuit of ‘reward’ and lack of concern over consequences.”

There are 2 types of addictions:

1) Substance - e.g. alcohol and drugs

2) Behavioural - e.g. gambling, sex, work

Over time addictions can seriously interfere with daily life. It can have devasting effects on personal health, relationships, careers, etc. As time goes by, the need to engage in addiction becomes more and more. Higher doses to feel the “high” or to feel “good”, or playing larger sums of money to feel the same “rush” is needed.

What are some of the signs of addiction?

  • Seeking out situations that promote the substance or behaviour
  • Increased secrecy
  • Health concerns such as insomnia and increased anxiety
  • Loved ones showing concern
  • Blaming others
  • Increased sensitivity to stress
  • Inability to identify emotions and moods
  • Problems at school or work
  • Neglect of personal hygiene
  • Financial issues

If it is noticed that either your or a loved one is having addiction issues, seek medical attention.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is widely used to treat addictions. CBT helps find connections between environment, thought, mood, physical reactions, and behaviours. Tools are given to help identify triggers and to help cope with cravings.

CBT can be done through one-on-one counselling, or through group settings.
